Story: Shadow was found in a vacant lot in west Michigan laying in a ball during a snow storm. When animal control put a leash on her to walk her to the car, they discovered 4 puppies under her she was trying to keep warm. Luckily, they were found in time and taken to the shelter, who called CCRC immediately to help. Shadow and her babies are now safe and sound getting the TLC they need. Shadow is an older lady that had many many litters in her life. They will change for her now that she is rescued. If you are interested meeting Shadow or her pups, please fill out an application!

Story: Freedom sat in the pound for nearly 2 years.  Very shortly after being pulled, her foster mom noticed she struggled to urinate.  A vet check and ultrasound revealed several large bladder stones.  Surgery was done to remove them and Freedom is now fine and no longer having any litterbox problems.  The poor girl sat in a cage for nearly 2 years, probably miserable because of the constant need to urinate.  She’s now fine and waiting for a new home.

Story: 6-year-old Beatrice is a little 10 lb. dog with a broken femur. Even though she looks very scared and worried, she has shown zero aggression- and the poor baby is in pain from her broken leg. This sweet girl needed a team to pull together for her and she has got just that. CCRC and Macomb County are working together to make sure Beatrice gets everything she needs and will be placed in a loving home when she is healed and ready for adoption. Story: 12-week-old Bailey was designated as “Rescue Only”  because she was not thriving at the shelter and was not growing at the same rate as her siblings. She had a large polyp in her nasal cavity obstructing her air flow.  The polyp was removed but it came right back.  A second surgery is scheduled. Poor Bailey breathes so hard you can hear her snoring from another room.  STH is hopeful that the polyp can be removed without it returning. Proper air flow is critical to the quality of life for this little girl.

Story, from rescue group: “Mr Largo was found near death in a hoarder home. He was emaciated, anemic from a bad flea infestation, loaded with worms, covered in dirt and feces, and appeared to have a severely injured eye.  Upon examination it was determined that he was in terrible pain, there was not any visible eye globe, and the eye socket needed to be cleaned out and sewn shut. The next day he went in for surgery where they found a very tiny undeveloped eyeball way inside the socket.  More than likely due to inbreeding. The socket was cleaned out, and sewn shut. It took a long time for the socket to mend completely, but he was a trooper and a total lover boy from day 1. It didn’t take long for someone to fall in love with him and adopt him once he was completely healed up.”

Story: Duchess was listed as rescue only for many reasons: terrified at the shelter, 7 yrs and blood in her urine, eye/nasal discharge. She was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection and then required emergency surgery after finding 4 large stones in her bladder. Thankfully, Duchess does not have any behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The shelter environment was stressful for her and caused her to tremble in fear. She is thriving in the foster home.

Rocky is getting all of his medical needs addressed and is currently being spoiled at his foster home and hanging out with the other dogs there. Story: Gladwin is named after the shelter he came from. The wonderful staff at the Gladwin County Shelter knew they had to get him to CCRC and CCRC welcomed him with open arms. Due to labored breathing in the shelter and during transport, Gladwin was immediately taken to the CCRC vet for xrays. His trachea and heart looked great which was a big relief to everyone. Gladwin is on some medication to help him with some issues and it has been noticed he seems to have a different breathing pattern when he is nervous. When he is calm, there seems to be no issues. Gladwin has a few more medical issues to be addressed and a much needed grooming visit before he will be place up for adoption. His foster is currently making sure he is as spoiled as can be during his stay with us.

Story: Penny was picked up as a stray and placed in quarantine due to obvious illnesses. The shelter felt that without proper vetting, outside what they could provide, that the dog wold need to be deemed a rescue only dog.  Penny has been placed on a number of different antibiotics to try to treat an upper respiratory, pneumonia and other respiratory issues to no avail. She will need to have an endoscopy to get a better idea of what is happening in her sinus area and a biopsy can be performed on the tissue.

Story: Ranger was pulled into rescue by Shelter to Home in December 2015.  At that time he had been in the pound since mid September, picked up as a stray.  He was very sick and had a terrible infection in his right eye. The pound tried several things to get his infections under control but nothing worked.  Once STH had Ranger, he was  immediately taken to the vet and started on antibiotics and eye meds.  Weeks of difficult medical challenges ensued and the  doctor feels that he will have congestion, as well as the draining eye, for the rest of his life. Ranger is a very happy and loving 10 month old, he is very active and full of personality.

Story, submitted by STH: “His story as we know it began in January. Bitter cold temperatures had him literally frozen to the ground. He was brought to a local shelter after he had been peeled off the ice. With a wound to his paw, emaciated, and unable to stand because of an injury to his leg, shelter staff immediately cared for him. He slowly began to heal but still found himself in the shelter.

It was the middle of March and he took his freedom ride into our rescue. His foster mom immediately saw signs that he was suffering. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL and was in extreme pain. We took action and made sure he was comfortable while we worked with our veterinarian partners to determine the best course of action.

We strive to give our rescues the best chance at a healthy life and the best start in their new adopted home. Gus recently had intensive surgery on his leg and is now recouping in his foster home. He faces daily medications and icing of his leg, and he will need physical therapy. It will be a long road, but we will be there for him the whole way. We can’t wait to see Gus running around pain-free.”

She is currently being spoiled at her foster home and will get whatever she needs through CCRC.

Story: Lee has terrible arthritis in his back and requires laser treatments which help him walk better.  He also had retinal melanoma in one eye , requiring its removal. The cancer was caught before it had spread, and he is cancer-free today.  Because of Lee’s arthritis, he sometimes struggles to get in and out of a litterbox. He needs a home where the litterbox can be kept on a non-carpeted, easy-to-clean surface in case he misses.  Pet steps around the house will help him get on and off the sofa and a bed.  He is super snuggly and well worth these extra efforts to keep him comfortable.

Story: Beau has had some bowel-related health issues. After his last surgery the vet begged for him to be on grain-free food.  While he was on steroids and hungry, this was a rather easy task and he now happily eats Earthborn food. He refuses to eat anything else. He is currently off all medications and appears to be in perfect health. Beau would love a home without any bossy cats and no dogs.  He is frightened of dogs even if they are ignoring him.  If you count the people who originally took him to the shelter, Beau has moved 12 different times between foster homes and adoptive homes.  THIS BOY IS READY FOR A FOREVER HOME!  When he needs medication, it’s one little inexpensive pill each day to start, then he gets weaned off.  He takes them beautifully with a pill pusher.

Story: Mac was about 80% bald with horrible red, itchy, inflamed skin from a form of mange.  He has received numerous medications and medicated shampoos as treatment and his fur has grown back beautifully.  He also got into some human medications (by doing the obnoxious things that puppies do!) and was taken to the ER vet for stomach pump and kept for observation and bloodwork to make sure his vital organs weren’t damaged.   Outcome: Mac is still undergoing treatment for mange.
