Duke

Duke

Rescued: Duke, male dog

Organization: Shelter to Home Animal Rescue, Wyandotte www.sheltertohome.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $200

Rescued From: City of Wyandotte Animal Control

Duke’s story, submitted by his rescue group: “Duke came into DCAC as a stray found in Southgate on December 9, 2013. He was 75 pounds and you could see his ribs. He was scared to death, not like a typical happy hyper lab, very shaky. He was never claimed. On December 23, he was neutered because he had an approved adoption application. They then discovered he was heartworm positive and backed out of the adoption. During his heartworm treatment we got him up to 87 pounds and lessened his fears of people.”

Organization: Shelter to Home Animal Rescue, Wyandotte www.sheltertohome.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $200

Rescued From: Taylor Animal Shelter

Rylee’s story, submitted by her rescue group: “Rylee came into the Taylor shelter with a puncture wound on her neck and a hernia. She also tested positive for heartworm and was anemic. She came to us for fostering and we had her on steroids and antibiotics for a month before she could have another blood panel to see if she was healthy enough to begin heartworm treatments. Her hernia has healed itself and surgery was not needed. She has had both heartworm treatments and after 8 weeks, her spay has been scheduled for May 1. Rylee is very shy around people and appeared to have no socialization at all. It was about a month before her foster parents could even touch her without having to corner her to pick her up. We have earned her trust and she now snuggles with us and is very happy playing with our other beagle. Our best guess is that she was just used for breeding and was never a loved family member. ”

Natasha

Natasha

Rescued: Natasha, female kitten

Organization: Shelter to Home Animal Rescue, Wyandotte www.sheltertohome.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $200

Rescued From: Downriver Central Animal Control

Natasha’s story, submitted by her rescue group: Natasha had a URI when we rescued her from the pound. After several courses of different antibiotics we tried antiviral meds. When that didn’t clear up her nasal congestion and sneezing the veterinarian anesthetized her and used a scope and syringe to flush out her nasal passages. A huge ball of dried mucus came out and they sent it out for testing to see if it indicated anything, but it came back negative. Natasha seemed a little better after but still some minor nasal congestion and sneezing. Her foster home noticed that when she spent large amounts of time in the basement that it seemed a little worse than when she stayed upstairs. After spending some time observing her at home, the vet determined that she had some sort of allergies and that as long as it didn’t seem to bother her, it was just something she was going to have and nothing needed to be done for it any further at this time.

Angel Lynn

Rescued: Angel Lynn, female dog

Organization: Canine Companions Rescue Center, Clarkston www.ccrcdogs.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $100

Rescued from: Cheboygan County Animal Control

Angel Lynn’s story: “Are you looking for a sweet, older gal who has plenty of zest for life and a tail that won’t stop wagging? Well look no further because here I am!!! My name is Angel Lynn and through no fault of my own my previous owners lost their home and that meant I lost mine too. I have wonderful house manners (I don’t even attempt to get on the couch), I’m house trained and crate trained, I enjoy a nice walk with my foster brother and sister but I’m just as happy watching episodes of the Big Bang Theory and sharing a bowl of popcorn. I’m always wagging my tail and I’m super happy to get some loving from my foster parents. I get along great with the 2 other doggies in the house and sit like a lady for my treats and while I wait for my meals.”

Outcome: Adopted.

Elmer

Elmer

Rescued: Elmer, male cat

Organization: Shelter to Home Animal Rescue, Wyandotte www.sheltertohome.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $200

Rescued From: City of Wyandotte Animal Control

Elmer’s Story: Elmer’s foster home noticed that he threw up more often than what is normal for a cat. He was taken to the vet and had his belly X-rayed and bloodwork done. His stomach was very full of food, his intestines full of gas, and his bowel full of hard stool. He also had very bad numbers on his liver values. He was given an enema, put on 3 different medications, and changed to a mostly wet food diet. We speculate that he gorges on dry food and then drinks and when the food in his stomach expands, it has nowhere to go but up. He had his bloodwork checked after ten days on the medication and things looked much better. He is currently not on any medications, but if he starts to vomit again he may need to be on something like Lactulose for the rest of his life. The vet isn’t sure what caused this behavior but it does seem like it can be controlled by giving him wet food that won’t expand in his tummy.

Outcome: Adopted.

Dasher

Dasher

Rescued: Dasher, male dog

Organization: Canine Companions Rescue Center, Clarkston www.ccrcdogs.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $100

Rescued from: Monroe Animal Control

Dasher’s story: Dasher is a five-year old beagle that came to CCRC on 1/2/15. Because he was heart worm positive, he just recently has been treated for that condition. He’ll wait a couple of weeks in his foster home before he will look for the family that he can call his own. That’s ok because his foster family says he is nearly perfect. He’s a calm, quiet dog that gets along with other dogs. He would be a perfect addition for any family because of his lovable demeanor and his soulful eyes.

Outcome: Adopted.

Sam Adams

Sam Adams

Rescued: Sam Adams, male puppy

Organization: Shelter to Home Animal Rescue, Wyandotte www.sheltertohome.com

Grant Amount Awarded: $200

Rescued From: Taylor Animal Shelter

Sam’s Story: Samuel Adams is about 5 months old and all puppy! He had a rough start being left at an over crowded pound with a broken tibia. Shelter to Home was able to pull him from the pound and splint his leg for a month until it healed. Being all puppy, he had a rough time following doctor’s orders and staying calm. His energy, in addition to his growth, required him to have a new splint almost every week. He went to see a surgeon after the tibia healed as it appeared that he might have had another issue with a break. The surgeon took a look and gave us great news, all Samuel needed was some physical therapy so his muscles and bones would get back to normal.

Outcome: Adopted!

Marlon

Marlon weighs 19 lbs!

Rescued: Marlon, male cat

Organization: Paws for Life Rescue, Troy pawsforliferescue.org

Grant Amount Awarded: $100

Rescued from: Hazel Park Animal Control

Marlon’s Story: Although I’m living the life of love in foster care, I do have a sad story. I was left in a wire crate on a street corner on a chilly October day. I had no food, no water, no litterbox and no way to stay warm. Luckily, a city contractor found me and brought me to Animal Control before the elements or something else got to me. I am a GREAT cat: friendly and loving; I enjoy lots of pets and scratches, get along fine with dogs and other cats. I am so happy to be out of the shelter and in a loving foster care home. I am a little chunky and could stand to lose a few pounds. I weigh 19 lbs, but that is just more of me for you to love.
