Ban Gassing and Pound Seizure.  Over the last two years several groups in Michigan have pushed to stop killing pets in shelters by gassing and to end Pound Seizure – (the practice of dealers buying/taking pets from shelters and profiting by selling them for research). The Michigan House of Representatives passed bills last year to end both of these practices but the bills died in the Senate. So the effort starts over.
In an effort to join forces and focus efforts, the various groups have formed a coalition called Michiganders for Shelter Pets.   If you signed a post card, petition or were on a mail list to receive updates on these efforts . . . you NEED to sign up again. Visit the website and voice your support.  Want to join the discussion - - - become a friend on Facebook
Humane Voters for Michigan - You can now view the voting records of state officials, pending state animal protection legislation, and endorsed candidates in election years based on their humane voting record. A Michigan based site has been created similar to the Humane Society Legislative Fund Scorecard at the federal level called Humane Voters for MI. You can also find information or links on how to pass ordinances in your local communities as well as many other helpful sites. To join the group, follow the instructions on the Home Page

Michigan Citizens Against Canine Long-term Tethering is busy meeting with state representatives to sponsor a bill to ban tethering.  If you would like to sign their petition  or follow the effort on Facebook.

The Puppy Mill Awareness Meetup is working to end the mass production of dogs in commercial kennels ("puppy mills"). They are a local group in Southeast Michigan focused on educating the public about pet store puppies, lobbying for stronger laws and promoting adoption as the first option! In January 2011, the Puppy Mill Awareness Group released a new publication titled Michigan Kennel Licenses Study. Who knew Michigan has 568 Breeding Kennels and the greatest number of kennels are found in Montcalm and St. Clair County? Although 100 of these kennels are for hunting and sledding related, it is evident that Michigan has its share of horrific Puppy Mills. For a copy or to join the Meetup group. The group is working to introduce legislation this year.
