SB 117/118  “Puppy Protection Act” 

  • Bill Would Regulate Large-Scale Breeders, enact standards of care and limit the number of breeding dogs
  • Reintroduced from last year when bill did not get out of Senate Agriculture Committee
  • Protects consumers from purchasing sick puppies
  • Supported by Michigan Pet Fund Alliance, Michigan Humane Society, Michigan Association of Animal Control Officers, Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

SB 285/286  Tougher Penalties for Pet Stores and Breeders 

  • Bill would strengthen current animal cruelty laws to facilitate prosecution of animal crimes involving large numbers of animals
  • Requested by Wayne County Prosecutor’s office
  • Introduced 3/21/13 by Senator Steven Bieda

HB 4168   Repeals Mandate for Sheriffs to Kill Unlicensed Dogs

Would repeal a law that requires county sheriffs to locate and kill all unlicensed dogs, and which defines failure to do so as nonfeasance in office.

HB 4300  “Primates as Pets Act”

  • Would prohibit ownership possession, breeding, sale, and importing of nonhuman primates as pets in Michigan.

   Action needed:  

  • Ask your legislator to vote YES on this bill

HB 4335   Allow Dogs in Outdoor Cafés

  • Revises a prohibition on restaurants allowing dogs in the dining area, so as to allow a restaurant to allow customers’ dogs in outside dining areas. Under current law only service dogs are allowed. Local governments could still ban dogs from outdoor areas.

HB 4534   Prohibits Shelters from Adopting to People on Animal Abuse Registry 

  • Would prohibit animal control shelters from allowing people listed on the registry to adopt animals.

 HB 4535   Establishes Animal Abuse Registry

  • Would require people convicted of animal abuse to submit their address, photograph, and social security number to local law enforcement and prescribes penalties.
