Best Practices for Shelters

The guidelines and resources contained in this section will assist shelters toward operating in a fashion that is modern, humane and works toward a “no-kill” state.

Many shelters are operating with standards developed decades ago and reviewing this material may seem overwhelming and make the reader think that a “no-kill” goal is impossible.  Nothing worth doing is easy or happens immediately.  Progress is made one step at a time and the first step is to conduct an assessment of the facility, then prioritize improvements – develop a strategic plan and stick to its implementation.  Changes will occur under this approach.  The Michigan Pet Fund Alliance is available to offer technical assistance with your efforts and encourages you to become a partner of the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance.
