Best Practices for Rescues

The guidelines and resources contained in this section will assist rescue organizations toward operating in a fashion that is best for the animal and works toward contributing to a “no-kill” state.

There are hundreds of rescue organizations in Michigan.  Most individuals start organizations or get involved in an established organization because of their passion to help animals – it is a very emotional cause.  Unfortunately sometimes emotions rule over what is best in the long run of animal welfare.

Rescue organizations are not regulated and some are not even legal corporations, therefore there are no standards for running and operating a rescue organization.  This section is meant to give guidance to rescue organizations while at the same time – presenting the “bigger” picture which if practiced will contribute to a “no-kill” state.  As you review these guidelines – we encourage you to keep an open mind – change is not easy but no one wants to have a strong passion and believe they are doing good when in the bigger picture they are actually contributing to the cause.  The Michigan Pet Fund Alliance is available to offer technical assistance with your efforts and encourages all rescue organization to become a partner with the Alliance.
